Mobile computing has been "coming" since 1997. Unfortunately all its past formats were disappointing:
- WAP, the special mobile online language that appeared in 2002 did not deliver.
- The "walled gardens" of services created by mobile operators in the early 2000s achieved only one thing: suppressing innovative services by third party providers.
But today people have more computing power in their pockets than they had on their desktop during the dot com boom. And Apple’s iPhone, Google’s Android and Nokia’s OVI are signaling a new era for the mobile interface. Very soon most of the interfaces that matter will be mobile.
This will not be the end of the PC of course. But a lot of the new things in the area of computing, be it for consumers or businesses, will involve mobile devices. It is not a surprise that all the big Internet players such as Google, Yahoo, etc. are fast shifting the battle ground to mobile.
